MonaLisa Touch Q & A
What is vaginal atrophy?
Vaginal atrophy is a condition that develops in response to declines in a woman's natural levels of estrogen, most commonly during menopause but also during breastfeeding or in response to another condition that affects hormone production. Vaginal atrophy results in a thinning and drying out of the vaginal tissues and less resilience within the vaginal wall, often causing inflammation and painful symptoms during intercourse and even at other times. Women with vaginal atrophy also are at increased risk for urinary tract infections as well as some symptoms of incontinence.
What is the MonaLisa Touch?
The MonaLisa Touch is a laser-based device that helps restore vaginal tissue by stimulating the natural production of collagen within the tissues of the vaginal wall. The device is inserted into the vagina during a simple, in-office procedure. The MonaLisa Touch was designed specifically for the very sensitive tissues in and around the vagina for optimal results and maximum safety and effectiveness, restoring the vagina and relieving symptoms of vaginal atrophy without resorting to medications or surgery.
How does the MonaLisa Touch work?
The MonaLisa Touch laser device is designed to create tiny areas of controlled damage or lesions in the vaginal wall that stimulate the body's natural healing processes. As the healing response “kicks in,” the body begins producing more collagen in the targeted tissues, helping to restore the natural balance and resilience of the vagina, so symptoms are relieved. This collagen response begins immediately after treatment and can persist for weeks as the tissues are “rebuilt” and the vagina's natural elasticity and pH balance are restored.
How many treatments will I need?
Most women achieve maximum benefits by having three separate treatments spaced about three weeks apart. No anesthesia is required, and women can resume their normal activities immediately afterward.
